I like to think of photography as encompassing 9 elements:

Chiaroscuro - direction, overlap and contrast of light and dark

Symmetry - balance, form and harmony or lack thereof

Patterns - their continuity and relationship to each other

Composition - framing of subject or scene

Mood - colour temperature, toning and graduation

Proximity - placement of objects in relation to each other

Similarity - of objects or the lack thereof

Continuity - natural flow of the eye through a composition

Emergence - placement and separation of positive and negative space
