Before I was a photographer, I was a freelance writer and editor – mostly of books. Among the books I have written: Movie Time: A Chronology of Hollywood & The Movies; and Show Time: A Chronology of the Theater, both published by Macmillan. I edited The New York Times Encyclopedia of Film and contributed to The American Film Institute Desk Reference. I’ve also written biographies for young adults of Anne Frank, Bette Davis and Duke Ellington.
Along the way I had a few accidental associations with photography. In the 1980s I briefly worked, as a writer, with George Kalinsky, official photographer of Madison Square Garden and the New York Mets. My editor at Macmillan was Mary Ann Lynch, a prominent photographer, known especially for photographing people, places and things that have kept alive the image of Marilyn Monroe. I spoke about Monroe at the opening of one of her gallery shows in the East Village in New York City.
I’ve always loved to take long walks around New York City, and about eight years ago started carrying a camera with me. I began to share some of my images on a private email mailing list, which now has about about 200 subscribers. In 2019 I began to post my photos on Twitter, where at last count I have 14,500 followers.
I grew up in Jackson Heights and now live in Brooklyn Heights, NY, and have an MA in American history from Columbia University plus most of the course credits for a Ph. D.
