Edward Cornwallis(1712 -1776) was a British Military Officer He was named Governor of Nova Scotia, arriving there with 2576 settlers(mostly from London) in June 1749. Upon his arrival Govenor Cornwallis set out to build the town of Halifax . He is known as the Founder of Halifax and a statue of him stands at the center of Cornwallis Park in downtown Halifax
The Original CCGS Edward Cornwalis was Built in 1949 by Canadian Vickers ShipYard in Montreal. She was the first postwar ship designed and built for the Dept of Transport and was the Prototype for all the Large and medium postwar bouy tenders. She was steam powered and kept in top condition until her decommissining in 1986. Her original ships wheel is proudly displayed in the upper stair castle of the current CCGS Edward Cornwallis .
