[Revised December 2009]

Mid 50s, not-yet-retired, weekend hiking-for-my-health type.

Although I have included some coastal Maine photos (Pemaquid, Monhegan, Castine, Baker Island, Acadia), my purpose with this photostream is to share some of the beauty of, and encourage visitors to, southern Piscataquis County Maine. This long-overlooked area has dozens of mountains, hundreds of scenic lakes and ponds, miles and miles of whitewater streams, 120 miles of the Appalachian Trail, the 175,000 acre KI / Jo-Mary multiple use forest, Maine Audubon Society's Borestone Mountain preserve, Nahmakanta, Debsconeag Lakes, Gulf Hagas National Natural Landmark area and, as I have discovered over the past four summers, more than fifty (and probably more than 100) accessible scenic waterfalls.

You may already know Greenville / Moosehead Lake or Mount Katadhin / Baxter State Park, both of which are also in Piscataquis County. This photostream covers the area south of and in between Moosehead and Baxter.

I have lived in the pretty town of Sangerville since 1988, so southern Piscataquis County is also my backyard.

Most of my early photos are digitally scanned from prints taken with hand-held pocket disposable cameras, usually Fuji 400 speed film. In the past year, I have switched to some inexpensive digital cameras. My photos are intended to be documentary, not artistic. If they impress at all, it is because of the beauty of the locations, not the skill of the photographer. In a way, that's the point. If you are a skilled outdoor photographer and if you mix your skills with these locations, the results are sure to be amazing.

I welcome comments on my photos, and will attempt to respond to all of them. I particularly welcome questions about visiting and hiking in southern Piscataquis County.

Finally, I have inherited administration of the "Piscataquis County Maine" photo pool, and I am pleased that that group now has 2,200+ photos and more than 90 members (up from about 8 members when I joined). If you take photos in Piscataquis County, I hope you will consider joining and posting there as well.
