Artist Statement
My love for photography started in 1973 when I met my wife and her 35mm camera. Ever since then I’ve been involved with photography, first as a professional, and now an artist with a passion for the landscape.
My biggest influences are great landscape painters like Wyeth, Folinsbee and Monet. As a result, I create photographs that have a painterly look. Painterly does not mean creating photographs that look like paintings. A great landscape painting expresses the artist’s impression of a place in a way that is more important than what the scene actually looks like. It is my impression of the landscape that I wish to share with you in my photography.
I’ve always felt a great sense of awe at being outside in nature and have been an avid hiker for as long as I’ve been a photographer. The best way to experience the natural world is on foot and I take my tripod and camera on every hike to record what I see and feel.
I’ve travelled to many places with my camera, but it is the local landscape near where I live that I am deeply connected to. No place is more special to me than the New Jersey Pinelands. The unique beauty hidden in the pine trees and tea colored water is a landscape I especially want to share.
