An old art critic told me once, long ago, back in the day when there were still such professions as art critic, – he told me: “Real art is not about depicting reality. It’s about expressing ideas. Only ideas create masterpieces. Everything else is decorative”.

In that respect, I must admit, most of my photos, – all of them, in fact, – are decorative. I don’t aspire to capture the sense of being, nature of things or ideal forms. Nor do I wish to make any statements. I just observe and register. That’s all. Photography is my way to interact with the world, to record it without prior interpretations. My ability to express myself with photography is limited by either my mindset or my character. I’m able to do it much better with words or drawings.

Yet I love photography very much: doing it, watching it, analyzing it. My own experience with it started long time ago in my youth. Them were, of course, film days. I tried enthusiastically to learn the entire process, from start to finish, and did everything myself, from shooting to printing, no labs ever involved. It was hard at times, but it was great fun. Then the first digital cameras started to appear. I tried one, and it felt almost like cheating. Too easy! Pretty soon I had found myself gravitating away from the craft and finally dropped it entirely. There just seemed to be no point to continue.

Than, something like five or six years ago, I was working on a small noncommercial project in Internet, for which I needed a lot of photo illustrations. Instead of purchasing them one by one, I decided to buy a digital camera. Things have changed a lot since the film era, of course, so I had to learn everything anew. It was hard, and I was hooked again.
