Radio Personality Since I was a kid! Background mostly in Houston, Texas. I worked many varied music formats on the AM/FM dial!
Houston area stations include KYOK, KNUZ, KIKK, KILT, KPRC, KENR, KODA, KFMK, KRBE, KBNO, KLVI, KTLW, KLYX, KNRO, KUEZ, KXYZ, KAUM, WXIT, WKAZ Charleston West Virginia 1969-70.
Inspired by Houston Radio legend Paul Berlin when I was seven years old, I had many years to practice the art of radio until I landed my first job at Houston Soul/R&B Station KYOK in 1965. I was 16 years old.
Back In 1961 I was a big listener of Soul/R&B music on both Houston stations KCOH & KYOK. In that year I had the pleasure of meeting KCOH radio owner Robert C. "Bobby" Meeker. At the time his station KCOH which was a daytime only facility with studios at One Main Street in The M&M Building downtown Houston. I was a young kid & Bobby Meeker was a friend of my dad. Weeks after Hurricane Carla blasted Galveston Texas, my dad took me to meet Mr. Meeker & the entire KCOH Air Staff.
On that day in late September of '61, he invited me into his office & showed me large blueprints of his brand new studio location. Construction was to begin soon and complete by Summer of 1963. It indeed opened on time. Only around 13 years old, I was invited to the grand opening celebration. It was an event to remember. So many Houston celebrities and officials were there for the big day. Bobby Meeker was a happy man. His vision was complete. The famous KCOH "Looking Glass Studios" at 5011 Almeda & Wichita remain there today!
I have hundreds of Houston radio stories although my early memories are the ones I treasure most of all. There were so many kind radio professionals who took their time to encourage & help me along my journey. A number of these Houston radio legends are displayed here in my Photostream Section. Like Bobby Meeker, there were countless & I am thankful to each & every one to this day. I remember them all.
