I am an amateur photographer getting back into photography more seriously. There is lots of catching up to do. Inspiration and ideas are key to start capturing good photos and I am finding that here. I am impressed and humbled by the creativity and the quality of work I see photographers posting here on Flickr. The psychiatrist C.G Jung said that every theory of psychology is a personal confession. I believe the same is true for any creative work, whether understood or not. Comments from others are always welcome.
Way back, I started at age 10 when I picked up my late grandfather's 1959 Rolleiflex 2.8E, Type 2. He left it to me, and I still have it. I read the Rolleiflex manual and learned the Weston meter, and got to it. I shot with Kodak Ektachrome and was mixing bulk chemicals (arguably not healthy) and processing my slides via E6 by age 12. Self taught, I won my first student Kodak award in 1971. The Rollei gave way to Nikons for greater flexibility. I was especially busy at Xavier High School, NYC, as president of the Photo Staff and at Georgetown University as a photographer for University Public Relations. I have had many cameras since, but not enough time for real photography. Fast Forward, I am using the Nikon Df. It's D4 sensor is low light friendly and the Df works well with my "legacy" lenses from the 1970s - as well as the newer ones. I am a walking Nikon Df demographic cliché. I am told the Rolleiflex is now apparently a hipster thing to do. I find all this amusing. I learned photography with dials, manual metering and manual focusing. An analog-type approach to digital photography works for me. I'm partial to a mixture of analogue and digital. (Even my stereo amplifier has new old stock, British 12AX7 vacuum tubes from the 1950s and 60s.) I am an intuitive thinker (INTJ) and take photos in a deliberative manner. More than gear, I care about the process and especially the results. Recently, I started astrophotography, but am interested in many photographic genres.
