Themes around the changing roles of women, patriarchal culture, and the female nude in art are those I’m most drawn to. Their encapsulation of complex issues, experiences and context surrounding the representation of women, create a tension that I want to explore, recreate and re-envision in historical and contemporary ways.

My portfolio art journey so far:

‘Eternal Gaze’ - I became engrossed in Renaissance art, the need to interpret the narrative, and societal context, influenced by my sociology and film studies. I wanted to paint big, expansive, canvasses using Chiaroscuro and Ebauche methods.

‘Woman in a Corset’ - My curiosity was piqued by Egon Schiele’s and Toulouse-Lautrec’s work challenging the classical ideals of human beauty and introducing voyeurism. I enjoyed the primary focus on the woman and powerful sexual imagery.

‘Guerilla Girl’ - feminist photography influenced by Guerilla Girls and Sarah Lucas whose aim of reclaiming women’s sexuality, attempted to be visually shocking and surface uncomfortable truths.

Interest in interdisciplinary subjects has been inspired by art historians Hannah Gadsby ‘Nakedy Nudes’ and Lynda Nead’s book ‘The Female Nude’ that deals with the enduring subject of the male gaze, themes of visual culture, religious imagery and social history subjects.
