My photography is a way of sharing myself with the world while occasionally facing judgement. There is a joy in my picture taking. To me, photography is realizing that what I see is a blend of my internal state interacting with the external world. The seemingly simple act of pressing the shutter button is driven by such complex reasons why. The result is perhaps an expression of myself that brings joy and at the same time vulnerability. Perhaps we all do this in some form or another when we create things.
When I make a photograph, I try to think about what story I want to tell and how I want to tell it. I ask myself, “What is it that I feel inside?” “Why is this moment such a personal one for me?” “Why is this moment so important?”
Sometimes, after capturing an image, the process isn’t clearly defined. The reason may be unclear. It is then that the picture needs to be studied. Its original intangible meaning wants to be unearthed and made into a visual language that can be recognizable and experienced.
I have come to realize that photography as an art form is a personal journey with many tentacles reaching inward and pressing parts of me for explanation. Explanations that can be made through a camera’s eye and later seen on paper. Explanations that can be shared with those who suspend judgement and simply experience a photograph for what it is to them.
