Welcome to our photo bank of images launched to raise awareness of what community justice looks like across Scotland.

Community justice is where people who have broken the law are held to account and supported to reconnect and contribute to their communities.

Where it is safe to do so, people who commit certain crimes receive community-based sentences. This can include treatment for underlying issues such as drug or alcohol addiction, unpaid work, fines and compensation or restrictions of liberty such as electronic tagging and curfews.

The evidence shows community justice can help people stop breaking the law again leading to fewer victims and safer communities.

Our photos include various projects in the community either relating to court orders or services to help vulnerable people avoid the justice system.

Community intervention projects support and supervise people who are subject to different court orders including Community Payback Orders and also help prevent people from going into the justice system and steer them towards a more positive direction in life. These can provide support to individuals for a range of issues including mental health, health, drug or alcohol addictions, debt, housing, anger management, family liaison or counselling.

There are also images of people carrying out 'unpaid work' while supervised - the work hours they have to complete as part of a Community Payback Order. This often involves making improvements to their local area and can mean the people involved learn new skills.

Other images include people in residential rehabilitation for addictions, pictures of recovery and electronic tagging to help people remain in the community rather than prison and not break ties to family and potential employment.
