The exhibition Next Season: Art and Science in the Face of the Climate Future kicked off on April 22 at the Costa Rican Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MADC, its Spanish acronym) in San Jose. Open to the public through June 19, the exhibition showcased works depicting climate change adaptation and mitigation developed by eight artists during residencies in some of the most important scientific centres in the Central American country.

Eight Costa Rican artists, selected in January through a public call, are exhibiting their climate crisis work developed during residencies in the scientific centres. From February to April, Elia Arce, Carlos Fernández, Esteban Hidalgo, Sara Mata, Rosella Matamoros, Óscar Ruiz Schmidt, Jonathan Torres, and Christian Wedel developed projects that combined their artistic research interests with climate crisis information and data.

Through their artwork, the artists pose urgent questions about the impact of climate change on various aspects of our lives, such as our interactions with ecosystems, in addition to proposing new dialogues between arts and science. With their cross-disciplinary approaches, the eight pieces exhibit different strategies to address the climate crisis, from direct confrontation to a thought-provoking poetic approach.

The Next Season project was undertaken by the Directorate of Climate Change of the Costa Rican Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) in partnership with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD). It was financed in part by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany via the NDC Partnership Climate Action Enhancement Package (CAEP).

Próxima temporada: Arte y ciencia ante el futuro climático, es la nueva exposición en el Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo (MADC) en San José, Costa Rica. La exposición, que estará abierta al público desde este 22 de abril y hasta el 19 de junio, ha sido liderado por la Dirección de Cambio Climático (DDC) del Ministerio de Ambiente y Energía (MINAE) y desarrollado con el apoyo del Instituto Internacional para el Desarollo Sostenible (IISD, por sus siglas en inglés) y el apoyo en convenio del MADC. Este proyecto ha sido financiado en parte por el Ministerio Federal de Cooperación Económica y Desarrollo de Alemania a través del Paquete de Mejora de la Acción Climática de la Asociación NDC (CAEP, por sus siglas en inglés).

Ocho artistas costarricenses, quienes fueron seleccionados a inicios de año mediante una convocatoria pública para desarrollar residencias con centros de investigación en temas de cambio climático, exponen el resultado de su trabajo. Elia Arce, Carlos Fernández, Esteban Hidalgo, Sara Mata, Rossella Matamoros, Óscar Ruiz Schmidt, Jonathan Torres y Christian Wedel desarrollaron entre febrero y abril propuestas que vinculan sus intereses de investigación en artes bajo el foco de la crisis climática.

Por medio de sus obras, el grupo de artistas lanza preguntas urgentes sobre la afectación del cambio climático sobre diferentes aspectos de nuestras vidas, nuestra relación con los ecosistemas naturales y los diálogos posibles entre artes y ciencias. Con sus acercamientos entre disciplinas, las ocho piezas exhiben estrategias distintas para abordar la crisis climática, desde la confrontación directa hasta la sugerente vía poética.
