For the first time in our history, the Ethiopian Police was established in 1913 during the reign of Emperor Menelik II. The police force was known as the "city watchman" or city guard. Well organized and suitable for time needs. After the end of the invasion, all government structures were dismantled and new ones were established by Emperor Haile Selassie. Modern police station re-established. The police force is governed by British citizens, according to Brigadier General Moges Beyene in his 1972 book PolicenaGize (Police at Different Times).

After the fall of the monarchy in 1974, the military junta - Dergu - came to power Dergu - Proclamation no. 10/1974 for the safety and security of the country; However, no provision was made for police organizational matters. Until the fall of the Derg in 1991, no special police institution was issued.

After the fall of the Derg, it was necessary to re-establish a police force for better organization. As a result, the police force is well on its way to enforcing the laws enacted in accordance with the Constitution and the Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The police force is also expected to contribute to the building of democracy at the national level, maintaining peace and accelerating development. The current police institution is the Federal Police Commission by Proclamation no. 720/2004 is non-partisan, based on community neutral service, commitment to police ethics, competence and quality of service.
