Beloved by millions, 'The Way' is St. Josemaría’s spiritually rich collection of points for meditation and prayer. Genial but pointed, 'The Way' is born out of deep Christian experience and aims at encouraging people to love God and live for Him.

The strength, the attraction of The Way is largely due to the fact that it is based on real, living experience, being the fruit of the author's work as a priest which began in 1925. The book appeared first in 1934 under the title Consideraciones espirituales and later (in 1939) received its definitive title, after being greatly expanded. Over the years, more than four and a half million copies have been sold, in 43 different languages.

This is one of the main attractions of the book — its direct, conversational style, its personal and deeply human character. As a reviewer in Osservatore Romano (March 24, 1950) put it: “Msgr. Escriva de Balaguer has written something more than a masterpiece; he has written straight from the heart, and straight to the heart go the short paragraphs which make up The Way.”

PREFACE

"Read these counsels slowly. Pause to meditate their meaning. They are things that I whisper in your ear, as a friend, as a brother, as a father. We shall speak intimately; and God will be listening to us. I am going to tell you nothing new. I shall only stir your memory so that some thought may arise and strike you: and so your life will improve and you will set out along the way of prayer and of Love. And in the end you will become a soul of worth."

Commentary taken from "The Way: Critical-Historical edition" prepared by P. Rodriguez of the Josemaría Escrivá Historical Institute:

The book deals with 'counsels', 'considerations' leading to meditation which is paused over, which should take place within the ambience of fraternal and friendly confidence, or of a father to his son, but in dialogue with God. 'The Way' is a book to pray with.

The words added in Burgos speak to us, indirectly, about those whom the book is meant for, as the Author saw when he published it: men and women who have received the basic Catholic catechesis and have (or have had) some interior life. He states modestly, that he is not going to tell them "anything new": he sees the dialogue which begins as something "to stir your memories". The style is not discursive but "familiar and affective", experiential, contemplative, always open to welcoming God's action who "listens" and then intervenes and speaks.

The Author hopes that in the soul of the reader, moved by his memories, "some thought may come to you that will strike you." The aim of this book - of these "touches of the Paraclete on my soul" (point 130) - is to achieve in the reader a qualitative leap in his or her Christian life, as expressed in the Prologue: "that way you will improve your life and enter upon ways of prayer and of Love."
