I've always loved building with LEGO®. But I've often thought, "Wouldn't it be great to display on the wall and other unexpected surfaces?". Not with glue, or tape, or anything permanent (or messy), but with some method that would allow me to make changes, tweaks, move things around, etc...
So a few years back, 3D printer at the ready, I designed and constructed a multi-directionally magnetic, LEGO®-compatible block that would allow me to build off magnetically receptive surfaces (magnetic chalkboards, dry erase boards, magnetic frames, refrigerators, etc...) in any build orientation (studs out, studs up, studs in, etc...). Why not just build off a LEGO® build plate hung from the wall, you might be thinking? Well, the build plate would limit construction to one build direction (studs out). And what about LEGO®'s own magnetic blocks? Also, similarly constrained; the magnetic pull only comes through the block's bottom so you're limited to building - you guessed it - "studs out".
So I designed my block, which I call an Mbrik™, to be magnetic on all sides. Even through the top where the studs are. This results in constructions that can come off the wall in any direction. Lots of builds (and a successful Kickstarter campaign later), I''ve been really happy with the results. I hope you like them as well. And if you want to get your hands on some Mbriks™, you can here: www.mbriks.com
