Why do you like photography? A question sometimes asked of me, I think, by people who perhaps find photography a strange pastime. What they really mean to ask is why? What's the point? And I struggle to answer them without sounding somewhat pithy or pretentious. Because no one actually cares. Photography is now ubiquitous. For most, nothing more than a way to share your meal or coffee on social media. Making pictures that no one cares about is really just another way of passing the time I guess. Like reading a good book. Which really is time well spent. And like a book, images can outlast you. Later generations may discover a random picture and wonder, wtf? Curiosity might be engaged, and a story might unfold that otherwise would have been forever lost. A legacy. Oh dear, the pretentious alarm just went off. Anyway, who knows? So why not?
