I came in contact with so-called "food porn" in the late 1990s when a Japanese guy I knew at that time took pictures of every meal he cooked. For quite a long time, I did not see anything like that again, neither did I have the wish to take photos of that kind on my own.

For almost 20 years I've been already using these blue place mats (which I had bought at a certain, well-known furniture store) when at some day I wanted to take a quick picture of some dessert I'd just made. This was the beginning of the "blue food" series.

I noticed that lots of other food pictures lack varying colors, mainly only yellowish-brownish shades are present. I missed clear, saturated green, red - and blue. Which is a rather untypical color for food, but this is where the place mats jump in. Originally, I did not plan to take so many pictures, I only wanted to do some quick shots with my smartphone cam, no artificial lighting etc.

But with Covid-pandemic starting in 2020 we needed to cook our own dinner on a daily basis and we still do so today. And we soon realized that we should have some more recipes than the usual most-famous dozen. So over time we collected more then 300 different meals and dessert - and their pictures.
