I have for some years had an abiding interest in what I have termed “collisions” since I became aware of these residing in the reflections of glass store front windows. Capturing these photographically, I came to realise the significance of the relationship of the desiring people on the outside of department stores and the desirable commodities displayed within, where between them there is only a few millimetres of fragile material. This dramatically changes each of their respective values. The specular qualities of glass place these two elements together within the same frame and the photographs ultimately incite a dialogue between ideas of the self and society within our current political and cultural milieu.
Moreover, within the glass there is this third space, one where the two elements don’t just meet but comingle. This third or middle space has since become a barometer for my thinking, prompting me to adapt my artwork to seeing through not just the specularity of this glass, but also through metaphorical lenses. Consequently, all my works have become collisions of image artefacts - happenstances which I curate as much as compose to provoke synergies of meaning between conflictions of images.
My previous career was as a photo-manipulator, and I have fully utilised Photoshop in my current work. This choice of this medium is not just a convenience however; in many ways the blending possibilities also emulate the process of looking through glass. Moreover, whereas I used to produce seamless compositions that were “clean” designs, an expectation within my industry sector, I now create pieces which maintain the rough edges of their production, so that visual glitches becomes part of the process. Indeed, these mediated artefacts are intrinsic to the message I am conveying as it further underlines the digital provenance of contemporary perception.
I may start with specific motifs, but by combining these with other images, collisions of meaning occur, culminating in cut and shut non sequitur compositions which, through their jarring relationships, interrupt their easy consumption.
