Teresa Marie Avina
Drag to set position!
My name is Teresa Marie Aviña but everybody calls me T. I’ve lived in Whittier, California my entire life. Being born with a learning disability, photography allows me to express myself in ways I cannot with words.
My work explores the relationship between light and dark and the pain I have endured in life. I believe photography is magical. It allows me to freeze time, capture moments we will never get again. Photography makes me feel invisible behind the lens. Capturing people's emotions and ways of being, without knowing a camera is there, is magical. My favorite style is black and white because I'm fascinated with high contrast. However, I am not afraid of color. With influences like Mapplethorpe, Ansel Adam, and many more great photographers, new synergies are generated from both traditional and modern structures.
I believe that one of the most important things in human experience is to be seen; openly and without judgment. I feel accomplished when I stay "out of the way of things" during a session and just let it happen.
A successful portrait is a true collaboration between artist and subject that requires trust and authenticity. I feel deeply honored when the veil comes down and a person truly shows me who they are.
I welcome the opportunity to "capture the spirit" and special moments of their life.
Thank you
