My current project's working title is 'beautiful men'. The starting point for this project was the theme 'masculinity' which was inspired by my visit to Tim Walker's Wonderful Things exhibition. However, the theme of 'masculinity' itself is very broad and there is a lot to explore with this, especially when you look at different representations through time. I was therefore keen to narrow this down and explore different sub-themes. A more recent exhibition I attended on the work of Aubrey Beardsley really helped with this. One of the things I admire about his work is how he has managed to shock the viewer, but do so in a light-hearted and comical way - convention tells you to avert your gaze but you can't help looking anyway. He was controversial to say the least and I'm excited to see the ways in which his works and ideas can influence mine. I am keen to encourage the viewer to look at and consider 'masculinity' in a new way; my work is now exploring historical dress, breaking etiquette and risqué presentations of the male form. The aim for this project is to create garments that reflect my research and experimentation into the noted themes.
