STATEMENT OF INTENT

For my final major project, I have chosen the title “religion” and in this project I want to explore many different sectors in religion like minimalist vs maximist through religion combining methods and material I explored in Exploratory and Pathway. I wish to focus on the guilt, celebrations, decorations and beliefs of religion vs the idea of having an absence of religion and the importance of possessions in religion within Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. In the end results I would like to work towards designing the interior of a space that is inspired by my chosen theme religion. The work I produced in my pathway stage will relate towards what I produce in my end point as I liked some of the ideas, I created and therefore may develop them even better and use for my final outcome.

At the starting point I believe my research on religion will allow me to look at the project from a broad prospective as well as having a visit to a mosque or cathedral looking at sources around me for me to take inspiration from. By looking at the colour schemes used, designs, patterns and how space is used in a religious environment will help me form more specific ideas as I go along. In my research I would like to look into Arabic writing and why it is used as symbols for decorations and in other spaces why is used to show a meaning. I would also like to do more research into existed religious places around the world that I may take inspiration from like the Blue Mosque in Turkey which has beautiful designs within its interior.

I am aiming to explore different techniques, medias and processes within my project as I would like to expand my ideas. Forexample, using the technique of weaving from the different materials I may do different weaving inspired by the artist Anni Alberts and try to include religious symbols and patterns that may be in a religious space. I also intend to make designs using illustrator as it was a weakness of mine in my pathway. I will roughly spend 3-4 weeks on these exploratory stages before I begin to develop specific responses in my work going into my final outcome.

I will critically review and analyse my work as well as determine if it is successful through group critics, keeping a diary for the purpose of keeping notes and writing a to do list for each week and tutor-based criticism. This will allow me to have a verbal platform to hear other people's opinions and way that I can improve as well as keeping of track with what I am doing.
