My name is Briana Durham, I grew up all over the state of Washington (Wenatchee, Redmond, Woodinville, Seattle, and Snoqualmie) and landed in Black Diamond with my partner, my 15 year old son, and currently an exchange student from Germany.

During the workday, I work for the Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee (also known as, AJAC) which is a non-profit organization that launched in 2008 with an investment from Washington State to skill-up the aerospace and advanced manufacturing workforce through registered apprenticeship programs. I am the Director of Innovation & Youth Apprenticeship Programs, the programs I run serve about 150 youth a year, 50 employer partners, and 13 school districts across the state. The youth programs are a part of a national pilot program aimed at getting students into the skilled trades.

Activities I enjoy doing are traveling, taking pictures, kayaking, mountain biking, gardening, paddle boarding, skiing, boating, snowshoeing, geo-cashing, building things out of Legos, going to Disneyland with my family, road-trips, and playing my guitar.

How do I interact with photographic images? I take tons on pictures at work to highlight all the cool manufacturing happening all across the state. I take pictures constantly when I travel, I recently got a Canon Rebel from my birth dad and I have been playing around with it this year. Talking about cameras is how we connect; he collects old cameras and has about 300 antique camera in his collection.

In my 20’s I was a naturalist/guide in Alaska where I picked up some skills on how to take photos of whales, bears, birds, seals, and other wildlife to help guests capture these moments on their adventures. My skills are totally armature at best but I take a ton of photos and sometimes I get a gem. I love reading and my favorite book it about a national geographic photographer it is called Learning to Breath: One Woman’s Journey of Survival and Spirit (see link below if you want to good read). The author has a lot to say about her life and how her photos shape her understanding of people and places around the world.

I think photography has a way of slowing us down, making us look at things differently, and highlighting points of view we normally do not see as clearly. I believe it is a powerful tool.
