Threshold began in Northampton back in 1998 as a small media development organisation, helping emerging talent find their voice and connecting organisations – from charities, prisons, community groups and schools with broadcasters and festivals – amplifying their voices on international platforms. We worked with artists experimenting with technologies at the very beginnings of digital adoption and helped their work reach new audiences. From the start, we asked ourselves a simple question: whose voices aren’t being heard?

Over time, our work grew and our focus shifted. As producers we believed in reinvesting our skills back into society and by moving our work into public and shared spaces we increased our impact and reach. By the 2010s, we’d become an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation and launched the Frequency Festival of Digital Culture in Lincoln, a biennial celebration of digital art, innovation and human connection, operating under the mantra Digital is For Everyone. Frequency brought new and innovative experiences to the city’s streets and historic spaces, inviting people to interact with art, technology and each other in creative, unexpected ways.

We carried that same spirit of inclusion and curiosity into new places across the UK and internationally – influencing regeneration programmes and successfully using creativity as a tool for dialogue, opportunity and change.

Today, Threshold is a creative placemaking agency. We design cultural programmes and digital skills initiatives that make places work better for the people who live there.

Whether it’s a festival, a community project, or a strategy for local growth, our aim is the same: to create meaningful and lasting change in the places where we live, work, and connect.
