I'm an anatomist and anthropologist, who also writes books, makes television, draws and paints. I'm interested in the evolution, structure and function of humans, and our place in the wider environment.
I originally studied and practiced medicine, then became a university lecturer, focusing on clinical anatomy and biological anthropology. I've been Professor of Public Engagement in Science at the University of Birmingham since 2012. I've presented a wide range of biology and archaeology programmes on television, originally pitching up as a human bone expert on Channel 4’s Time Team, back in 2001. I then presented Coast on BBC2, before going on to write and present a range of BBC series, including The Incredible Human Journey, Origins of Us, Prehistoric Autopsy and Digging for Britain, as well as several Horizon programmes. I also present the series Britain's Most Historic Towns on Channel 4. I've written nine popular science books, including The Incredible Human Journey, Evolution: The Human Story, The Incredible Unlikeliness of Being, and Tamed: Ten species that changed our world.
But the real reason I'm here on Flickr is to share some of the illustrations that I've created over the years. You're very welcome to use them privately, or for teaching - just give me a credit.
