Thoughts on the Canon 5D MK1
Within a week of buying my 5D I bought another as a spare and after 2 months I bought a 3rd. As at 2022 I have 5... I have a problem.
The 5D came at a time when the digital camera's objective was to produce photos as good, if not just a little bit better than the best film cameras. This is why they have a beautiful film like quality about their images. By the time the 5D Mark II was released the beauty of 'filmesque' images was lost forever and the microscopic perfection expected of high megapixel cameras became the benchmark of quality. This is why I think there will be a resurgence of the 5D. The beautiful grain (noise) and colour that comes out of this sensor and processor combination will never be repeated.
The first images I took inside the pitch black Ernest Junction Railway Tunnel with a flash and long exposure produced colours so bright I had to turn the saturation down in post which made me smile.
Their limitations are of no concern to me. I couldn't care less about high ISO, pixels, burst rates, video, touch screens, live view or 10 pages of menu options for features I have no use for. The no nonsense, simple attitude of its design is one of its biggest draw cards. I believe it is a special camera that will become more popular as time goes by. I now have 4 perfect examples and 1 EDC. I will continue to rescue them based on their condition and price for future generations to enjoy.
