As different challenges appear in my life, I have always turned to art to work through them. Looking back at previous work, I can see how far I’ve grown as both a person and an artist, each work reflecting the many phases I have gone through to become the person I am today. Like a bird building a nest from the materials around her, I pick up inspiration from overheard conversations, traditional artwork, tabloids, architecture, and social media. Like my art, I am a product of my environment. I surround myself with creative people, from artists to musicians, who constantly challenge my long held beliefs of what art should be. As I mature as an artist, I am beginning to understand how these unique perspectives enrich my art. My work draws ideas from the decadence of the 19th century painter, Joseph Frédéric Charles Soulacroix, Jeff Koons’ clash of high art and pop culture, and the English painter, John William Waterhouse known for his allusions to Greek mythology.
My artistic process involves weaving a narrative from the disparate memories and snippets I encounter in my day, similar to how the mind ties a dream together. In a sense, I think through my art. In my pieces “the Mountain” and “Gluttony” I push the boundaries of traditional methods: painting landscapes with polymer clay, and overlapping large oil paintings with neon light signs. In my piece “Dissimilitude” I use contrasting colors to juxtapose old and new subjects to evoke a lasting sense of ambiguity. I employ rich hues and sinewy lines to capture the delicate texture of draped silk and juxtapose that softness with jagged modern shapes. I want to invoke deep feelings and a sense of questioning in my viewer.
