My art is often informed by mythology and the supernatural. I have been somewhat obsessed for the majority of my life with this subject and still have a great thirst to know more. As a child I was fascinated by ancient Egypt and the gods. Since then my knowledge has grown immensely covering many ancient European religions, as well as some Asian and native American. My main passion is storytelling, I love to create worlds and characters to escape into. This has nearly always taken the form of drawings since I was young. Drawing was my escape, and through it I could create whatever I wanted. I still feel this way as an adult. It is for this reason I adore fairy tales, I enjoy the Disney sing songs, but I’m referring to the darker much more adult original stories from however many hundreds of years ago. My work was once described as “wonderfully weird and potentially creepy” which I think sums me up. My work is often strange, possibly unnerving but always has an element of beauty to it, much like a fairy tale.
I have suffered with mental ill health and this has informed as well as shaped a lot of my work. My experience of psychosis has partially inspired my artwork as well as my knowledge of mythology and psychology. As you look through you will see a theme of beauty and darkness. It is a pseudo-reality, an embodiment of the weird and wonderful which is so familiar to me.
Another theme which has majorly informed my work is the idea of feminine power. Feminism is often considered a dirty word but I enjoy exploring the more extreme aspects of the subject, specifically sexuality and dominance. The link between mythology and sexuality is not immediately obvious, however when we look at the theory of vampirism it opens up a whole line of enquiry that I decided to pursue during my BA. The fang as a phallic symbol and the bite as a metaphor for rape are both common ideas, however rape revenge (the female vampire) is a much lesser discussed topic. I analysed the subject of vampires in popular culture, so film and television, using theories of psychology. This allowed me to explore subjects of rape, sexuality, disease, racism, hierarchy, as well as teenage development and juvenile attachment.
I hope to further my exploration of all these topics and develop a strong body of coherent work that demonstrates not just my abilities but my knowledge and passions. I would be very interested in working collaboratively with other artists/illustrators on these and other subjects.
