1960s footplateman turned mature student. Graduated from Leeds University in 1989 with BA in History & Philosophy of Science. Railway journalism and book writing followed; with articles and photos in Steam Railway Magazine, Heritage Railway Magazine, Railway Magazine, Steam Days, Steam World, Steam Railway News, and Steam Classic as well as the books Racing Trains, How Steam Locomotives Work, Forward! The revolution in the lives of the footplatemen 1962 -1996. More recently I have written about my time as a footplateman beginning at 55C followed by 3 years at Nine Elms, where I set a record which still stands, before finishing at 56A Wakefield (Belle Vue) hauling coal over the Pennines with Dub Dees.
