A lifelong birder and photographer, slow to move from film to digital and wish I'd done it a whole lot sooner. Based in the the north-east of England I travel extensively both at home and abroad.

I retired from working as as a family doctor in March 2024 which has given me a little more ime to take photos. I still play in a band, manage 2 nature reserves and a a piece of woodland, cook for the family and be a hands-on grandad so how I get the time for photography is a bit of a mystery. I am am moving more & more from point and shoot to photo set-ups now. That might be an age thing!

For many years I was a Canon shooter with all the big lenses. I changed from the 1Dx [which was amazing] to the 5D Mk IV because of the image size. The images from that camera were amazing but the focusing was pants. I was due to upgrade my equipment, especially for the lighter-weight big lenses and the more I looked into it the more I became convinced that Sony mirrorless was the way forward.

As of Aug 2021 I have started using the Sony A1 and 600 mm f4 lens as well as the 200-600 for closer hide work. The images are just as good as the 5D Mk IV but the focusing is fantastic. I have also just bought the Sigma 500 f5.6 for when I am out birding and just want a camera along for the ride. The quality of the lens is superb. See the American Pipit from Feb 2025 for an example
