Updates:
- Jan, 2024: Passed defense on Jan 11th, 2024 - Officially a Dr.! 🎉 It has been a challenging journey - And I am feeling extremely grateful for mentors, family, and friends, who supported me through this journey ❤️😊
Now slowly getting back to photos :)
- December,2022: I will be spending the spring term of 2023 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, so I will be stopping all the student photographer work and GSAS Photo Society involvement at Harvard!
Looking back, I am happy with how much I was able to do related to my photography hobby, despite how busy grad school is. I felt like I just had a lot of fun in the process. I got opportunities to learn and improve my photography techniques, and I got to connect and serve the student community through photography. I am also really grateful for the friends I made along the way.
In the meanwhile, I am looking forward to taking a break from the responsibilities and focusing on my research work and hopefully graduate soon! ^_^ I also hope to keep taking photos for my personal enjoyment!
In the future, I wish to potentially venture into drone photography, underwater photography and wildlife photography if there is such a chance!
- Fall 2019-Fall 2022, I became the Vice President of the GSAS Photo Society, a graduate student hobbyists photography club! I organized events along with other board members, including Irina Tolkova, Kate Zhou and MJ Park! We organized events such as:
-- Photo walks: Walked around Cambridge/Boston and took photos in the walks
-- Photo hike: Went on a hike at the Blue Hills and took photos of the nature
-- Speaker talks/workshops: Invited professional photographers in different fields (eg. commercial, wildlife conservation, etc) to talk about their work and career to students, and to answer any questions
-- GSAS Photo Contest: Every semester, we collaborated with the Arts Fellows of the GSAS Student Center to host a photo contest, where GSAS affiliates can submit their photo entries to three themes of photos. We pick different themes every semester. Some themes may be: macro, black and white, season, etc. The public can then view and vote for their favorites. The winners would get prizes.
-- Ice skating social: Went ice skating at Kendall Ice Rink and got Tatte afterwards! It was a blast - especially since the club covered the Tatte food and drink money for the students - and as grad students, we LOVE free food and coffee! XD
-- Annual student family photoshoot: Every fall, we organize photographers to take photos for GSAS student families. Just in time for the student families to putting the photos on prepare their holiday cards! :)
-- Took photos for the world music concert by the GSAS student center.
-- Helped connect students in the club with freelance photography opportunities: when we received photography requests (usually paid opportunities by other organizations or private individuals), we advertise them to the students. This is really great, because students got a chance to try out what a photography work would be like, in a low pressure way.
- Some motivations (09272022):
-- Try out different photography environment, situations and techniques;
-- Build up my portfolio!
-- Buy a new lens that I have been dreaming of when I hit 20 events!
-- (10052022) I bought the lens! :) I am really happy that the money I earned from photo assignments can help cover the costs of my investment in this (expensive) hobby! XD
- Fall, 2022, I started a student photographer position for CS 50. CS 50 is the largest course on the Harvard campus and it has more than 2,000,000 learners worldwide, as it is offered on edX for free. This was a really nice learning experience for me, since my photos were critiqued by a professional photographer in the course production team, until my photos reach their standards and requirements. In the process, I learned to pay more attention in different aspects of my photos, like color balancing, consistency, warmth/coldness, toning, framing of photos, etc. I also learned the importance of "quality over quantity", that I shall delete similar shots/blurry shots, etc, and keep only the best ones. I am thankful for the opportunity. Now when I look back at my photos taken before the course, I could see many aspects of how they could be improved/how I would do differently in the editing.
- October 22nd, 2021: I can finally walk (with caution and a protective cast) again. With the regained mobility and the freedom that came with it, I will start taking photos again. :)
- Unfortunately, on September 28th, 2021, I hurt my ankle and have a potential fracture. For the next month to two months, I will be stopping many activities, including photography... It was a bummer, because I couldn't go to the annual student family photoshoot, which I had been looking forward to... But hopefully I can have a full recovery soon!
- In Fall 2021, I became a student photographer for Harvard GSAS office. I am looking forward to use the opportunity to attend more events, meet more people, and test out my lens and camera settings in different lightings and situations!
- Spring 2020, I decided to use this place to store my paintings and drawing as well! I am going to try to document down the time I make them, so when I get older, I can look back at them to remember my life now... :)
- In Fall 2019, I started a freelance student photographer position at Harvard SEAS Communications! Since I started grad school here, I have started doing some event photography, sometimes taking assignments, sometimes volunteering at events. In this way, I wish to keep doing what I like, and take my interest a step further!
