I use Flickr primarily to post pictures of myself with county courthouses that I visit. While I receive genuine enjoyment from the architecture, history, and politics surrounding these buildings, my goal is much more interpersonal. It is not a quest to document for historical purposes or as a "challenge"--though I do hope to visit every US County. Instead, it is a way for me to connect with Americans everywhere. Courthouses are one of the few places where nearly everyone has, or will have, a memorable experience, some good and some bad. Perhaps you yourself were there to receive your first driver's license, file a divorce, challenge a property tax assessment, or speak as a witness at trial. Unlike other government buildings, they are locally focused and ubiquitous across the country. And unlike other tourist destinations, they are very much entwined in our daily. This egalitarian characteristic sparks an acute connection to people that I find very rewarding.
In 2016, my wife and I began visiting Nebraska's counties. This is where my passion for county courthouses began. We finished visiting all 93 counties in Nebraska in early 2018. It was not until later in 2018 when I decided I would take images with other courthouses I came across. Since then, I have been visiting more courthouses slowly and surely, mostly in the Great Plains and Great Lakes regions. I also like to visit NCAA Division I and R-1 Research universities when I travel, among other sites.
My hometown is Cortland, Gage County, Nebraska, a small bedroom community south of Lincoln. I attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln ('19) (go Huskers!), where I played in the marching band and studied political science, classics, and psychology. My first job was at the Center for Rural Affairs which brought me to Oakland, Burt County, Nebraska. I attended law school at the University of Michigan ('24) in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, Michigan, and spent some time in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. I now reside in Hebron, Thayer County, Nebraska, where I work at a law firm. Aside from travelling I enjoy walking and hiking, reading, DIY activities, and watching NASCAR, college football, and rodeo.
