The Leprosy Mission Trust India
Drag to set position!
The Leprosy Mission Trust India is a 143-year-old non-governmental organisation (NGO) - founded in 1874 - working in India with people affected by leprosy for their healing, social inclusion, and empowerment.
Leprosy, also called Hansen’s disease, is a communicable disease caused by a bacterium, 'Mycobacterium leprae'. Leprosy can be completely cured if detected early and treated with multidrug therapy (MDT). Researchers believe that leprosy has existed since 4000 BC. In its onslaught on mankind, the disease has left a trail of pain and suffering. Leprosy has been a highly stigmatising disease for centuries because of age-old beliefs and fear. People still believe leprosy is a divine punishment for past sins and immoral behaviour. Being infected with leprosy is considered shameful in many societies, and because of this, patients, even after they are cured, are not accepted in the society.
World Health Organization reported that in 2015, a total of 211, 973 new leprosy cases were reported from 108 countries worldwide. This means, globally, every two minutes someone is newly diagnosed with leprosy!
India has 60% of the global caseload. A total of 127,334 new leprosy cases were detected in India during 2015-16. This means, in India, every four minutes someone is newly diagnosed with leprosy!
Please join us in our mission to bring healing, inclusion, and dignity in the lives of people affected by leprosy.
