As a photojournalist and journalist for several newspapers, I've picked up a few awards, had some adventures, and learned how to be poor. I lived and worked in Virginia, Montana, Wyoming, and Washington (state). In my 40s, I moved to Rappahannock County and lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains or its foothills. I devoted as much time as possible to studying, writing about, and photographing nature and also working and volunteering on conservation projects, including founding a Virginia Master Naturalist chapter. Since 2022, I've been living in Shenandoah County, which stretches from the Shenandoah Valley to the Allegheny Mountains.

In 2011, I started a newspaper column, "Wild Ideas," which is published in the Rappahannock News (RappNews.com/WildIdeas), and a few years ago, I added a blog at WildIdeas.us, which I update intermittently with posts and more often with photos. Now semi-retired, I decided I wanted to share my photos through Creative Commons and am working on cataloging and uploading my best work for that purpose here and at CalPhotos. Some of the photos I've included are less about art and more about science; I hope they help those interested in nature learn, as I have, from looking more closely at native species.
