These photographs record what my wife Jean and I were doing in Afghanistan from 1960 through 1963.

In Kabul, the Americans in our group were members of a 40-member team of English teachers hired by Columbia University Teachers College.

We were all part of the United States Overseas Mission to Afghanistan (USOM), later called United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Many of our associates were Afghans, hired by the Ministry of Education.

In Kabul, Jean taught for a short while at Vocational-Agricultural school, then at Ebni-Seena, a junior high school in Kabul. She contributed to various materials for teaching English to Afghans. For a short while she instructed Afghan women, then tutored the Royal Princes of Afghanistan.

I taught at Habibia School, then at the Afghan Institute of Education, and at the English Department of the University of Kabul. I served as Chairman of the English Department at Habibia School, officially named Habibia College. Habibia, founded in 1923, was modeled on Aligarh College in India. Under Amanullah, it became the fourth foreign-language high school in Kabul.
