"What enthralls me and nearly 3k people who follow Rachel in Flickr, is the peacefulness and honesty in her photography. Her photos are usually of beautiful landscapes, artistic selfies, and some risqué shots intermingled. It’s through these themes that Rachel gives her viewers a glimpse into her talent. Innocence, happiness, love and peacefulness are often the topical themes that entice us to look closer at Rachel’s photos. But long shadows and muted colors tell us a story of depth. Much like a heroine in literature — beneath the soft layers, fragrances, intimate facets of her skin, her eyes or her smile, there lies a provocative, intangible beauty and strength at the core. Stylistically, a facet of her art is her slightly muted colors. Rather than surrendering to blatant shadows and harsh contrast for effect, she fades her colors to bring forth more light — just like when we squint our eyes slightly on sunny days, muting the scene a bit in order to be able to see in the bright light. We may not even realize it, but her muted images draw us further into her photos. Most every picture has a thin, enticing, foggy mask. How can we resist looking deeper for what we are encouraged not to see? Her photos tell a story. However, the story is not one of facts, but of feelings. It is never revealed and can never be completely told. But what Rachel can communicate is the emotion. The emotion of every woman and man as we live this human experience. The occasional loneliness. Sorrows endured and overcome. A heart that remains vulnerable to love despite how many times losing love has torn it down. How many times love has demanded we pull the pieces back together and continue into the unknown and unknowable. And every day, in every moment of life, our endeavor to find ourselves and our enormously tiny place in the world — with an ever present hopefulness/hopelessness that makes smiles more precious, and sharp words draw more blood." -- my words, quoted from the June issue of FOCUS Magazine.
