Throughout her life, Sonja has been attracted to architectural scenes comprised of interesting rooflines and multiple components, such as barn complexes and industrial structures. Influenced by her training as a Hindu miniature painter, she enjoys using line and color to compress such scenes into two dimensional compositions where the various planes are flattened into interesting shapes and areas.
Sonja’s most recent pieces explore ways of representing her interpretation of industrial buildings by manipulating the arrangement of the geometric forms into almost jigsaw puzzle like compositions, deliberately corrupting perspective, taking liberties with light and shadows, being precise with line, and bold with color.
The results are sharp, slightly abstracted, and most definitely affectionate portrayals of what are often overlooked, unappreciated, even considered “blighted”, but very interesting architectural specimens.
