You cannot step into the same river twice and we are never the same person when we visit and revisit Mariel's photographs. The mystery of her soul certainly pulls you in. One of her photographs has a caption: "The soul dares to search outside the limits of its comforts" and that is the spirit of her exploration. Another caption reads: A passage into solitude’s chambers. And then you get the idea of her play of light and dark wherein the dark fills her frame for most of the time. And yet, soulful light pierces through the dark to speak about the subject or about an surging emotion pacified by light. There is a kind of struggle between abstract and real world and so darkness envelops her photographs but she is at home with her creative plunge into depths of the soul and that is reflected through serenity of light always there in her photographs - as a retreat you go into only if one is willing to travel through the dark. And that is what is harder to do and so I do not even follow her as much as I become hesitant to enter into my own internal world with fuller acceptance. But she dares you to explore this dream-like state and see the self more clearly. Her world is "mysterious-dreamlike" and "beautiful-dreamlike" both at the same time. Enigmatic as it may appear, she tries to celebrate the silence in the things. It will always be hard to enter her shadowy world, but then as you see it, you find that shadow suddenly releases its hold on the mind. The terrain of her mind externalized in her photographs is lit with a creative light that purifies everyday experience. the world here is not a direct gaze of the eye, but impressions of her world are refracted through a lens and emotion caught by the soft glitter of the reflection, the sunlight awash through cloud, the glimmer of light on water, the glistening light of water drops, the mystic air billowed up. Timeless world of childhood and dream world is part of her exploration. She is the innocent link between her photography and spectrality found in her surreal artwork.
