This photo stream is dedicated to images of Flaybrick Memorial Gardens.

Designed by Edward Kemp - who is buried in the cemetery - Birkenhead cemetery opened on 30th May 1864.

Originally covering 16.5 acres the cemetery was later extended to 26 acres.

The cemetery is split into Church of England, Non-Conformist and Roman Catholic sections.

The Church of England and Non-Conformist chapels were situated near the Boundary Road entrance with a separate chapel building for Roman Catholics.

Unfortunately the cemetery suffered from neglect and vandalism over the years and the Roman Catholic chapel was demolished in 1971.

A small memorial wall has been erected to mark the site.

The other chapel also suffered and the roof and imposing central spire were demolished.

However, funding from the local council and English Heritage has enabled the remaining structure to be restored.

"Friends of Flaybrick" are a group of volunteers who help maintain the Flaybrick cemetery grounds.

From ground clearance and path laying to weed and plant control around the memorials.

Testimonials

My own feeble album of local notable gravestones - a lockdown project - is put to complete shame by your collection. How wonderful to find your images and to just imagine the research that's gone into them! THANK YOU SO MUCH
