I live in a bland, modest mid century suburb in San Antonio, Texas. For decades this semi-rural area sat undisturbed on the northern part of town, a few small neighborhoods surrounded & divided by open fields and acres upon acres of live oaks, scrub cedar and mesquite, where a vast ranch ran a few cattle. Upon the rancher's death, the land was sold for redevelopment. The response was immediate and largely grotesque. Huge sgated communities filled with obscenely large homes sprung up immediately to the north, dwellings for the richest in San Antonio, blocking our views, cutting into limestone hills. The area my son grew up in was home to coyotes, egrets, roadrunners, tortoises and owls, even a few wild turkeys, as well as more common suburban wildlife. The wildlife are almost gone now, bulldozed out of existence, victims of urban sprawl. My son is grown and he moved out this spring. For him, I want to document what remains as it transitions into what it will become. This is Dreamland.
