Humans are now drivers of environmental change on a scale that is unique in Earth’s history. Anthropocentric landscapes are characterised by reduced biodiversity and ecosystem functions caused by humans. At the same time, we are preparing for space exploration, designing habitats for colonists to life on places that completely lack any life or ecosystems. With the population growth together with crises of water, energy and ecosystems the future leave us with a dystopian scenario. How designers and artists working together with scientists and engineers can foresee a different speculative future? The desire to explore essentially uninhabitable spaces is an important driver for a circular approach to materials. The project: Symbiotic Machines for Space Exploration (SyMSE) aims to create an autonomous system which can help Earth’s environment and be a fundamental entity that can facilitate terraforming on other planets, preparing the atmosphere for terrestrial life.
