I'm Gary Sauer-Thompson, a basic, old school film photographer and blogger, born in New Zealand, who lives in Encounter Bay in the coastal town of Victor Harbor in South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula. Victor Harbor is about 80 km south of Adelaide ( the capitol city of South Australia) and it is on the edge of Southern Ocean. South of the Encounter Coast is Antartica.

The photos in my Flickr photostream are obsolete in the sense of being film based. They are a mixture of 35mm, medium and large format, and were made with a variety of cameras. (The camera roll consists of early iPhone photos circa 2017. I simply don't recall these). Mine is a low profile as Flickr currently is not what it once was. My hardy on-line colleagues in Australia are those associated with the important View Camera Australia, which is based in Melbourne, the centre of large format photography in Australia. There is a sense of nostalgia here about unrealised projects and forgotten moments, the dead ends and detours, and the roads not taken in Australia's photographic history.

The fragmentary everyday images of the world captured in natural light should be interpreted as experiments or provisional explorations based on a commitment to analogue technologies and their resistance to the pervasive influence of the digital. They nostalgia of the backward gaze. entails actively remembering and preserving elements that might otherwise be perceived

as lost or forgotten.

Photographers now live in a contemporary world of the smart phone, social media, the digital network image, generative A1 and global biennales. If analogue photography is a minor photography in this spectacular global image culture, then we need to hang onto it and its culture, as it could provide possibilities for a critical perspective on our current digital, technological culture that enframes our photography. That is the hope.
