I started my photography as a hobby in 2005 with my main interest in nature subjects. As my skills developed I concentrated on wildlife and landscape photos. My gear started with basic Canon point and shoot cameras and has advanced to my favorite cameras which are a Canon 40D, a Canon EOS 5D and Canon EOS 7D, using Canon telephoto and zoom lens. My favorite lenses for wildlife photography has been an EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM and an EF500mm f/4L IS USM.
Over time I have followed the Sand hill crane migration as they come through South Dakota and with luck I have been able to see a few whooping cranes each year to get pictures of as well. Water fowl and shore birds are favorites of mine too.
We are lucky in our area to have two species of deer, both white tail and the mule deer and they can be found here year around making for great photography subjects.
South Dakota offers many opportunities for nature photography. One of my favorites is Custer State Park, located in the southern Black Hills. I try to take a few days a couple times a year to get shots of the young animals, birds and plants in the spring and again in the fall. The Custer Park Buffalo Roundup in the fall has been a great chance to get some great action photos.
