This Flickr! account is to share some of my experiments with very high resolution images (upwards of 90 Megapixels).
Obviously viewers need to be able to see these images at full resolution, so I cannot display them on my main Flickr page (Natures Pencil) as there the maximum image size is restricted.
There is a myth that "Megapixels don't matter" ... except, perhaps, to give scope for cropping. The argument goes along the lines that the bigger the image the further away you view it.
Unfortunately it just isn't true!
It is true enough that "Megapixels don't matter" for most people. If you display images on your phone or tablet or use them to illustrate web pages (and occasionally make small prints) then anything over 8Mp is overkill.
It is also true that diferences like 18Mp vs 24Mp don't make much difference to the resolution that can be captured. People fail to take into account that to double the resolution you need 4x as many pixels! A 33% increase is not going to make a huge difference.
But Megapixels do matter for anyone that wants to make enormous prints that still look good whether they are viewed from the farthest point in the room or from inches away.
My 16.7Mp DSLR captures a lot of detail when used with a top quality lens and good technique, but a 144Mp image is in a completely different league. It can hold up to three times as much (linear) detail.
