From 1969 to 1991 Charlie and Julie worked at Associated Adverting Agency. In 1991 she and her husband Charlie opened up Julie McDowell design in their home in SW Roanoke, VA.
Charlie McDowell worked for TV-10 after his hitch in the US Army was over in 1955 to 1969 as the Art Director and also worked for Associated Adverting Agency from 1969 to 1991.
Julie McDowell, who died Sept. 1, 2012 at age 81, was one of the most prolific and successful designers in Roanoke during a career that spanned nearly 50 years. From her home studio after 1991 she began working in stained glass, creating elaborate designs for Catholic churches from Virginia to Texas.
What makes her designs and logos distinctive is that virtually everything she produces contains symbolism which adds an intellectual dimension to the art," John Will Creasy wrote. He later added, "Julie is an artist not only for [the] eye, but for the mind and heart, as well."
McDowell gave freely to civic and religious groups, for whom she donated logos, bulletins, banners, windows and other works.
Included on this site is just a sampling of the McDowell’s artwork from television to stained glass.
