I've been in Second Life since 2008, but only seriously exploring photography since October of 2018. It's probably past the time that I should be saying that I "still feel pretty new to this," but I'm definitely still learning new approaches and techniques all of the time: I owe a very great deal to the real artists I've seen at work here on Flickr, and on the Second Life Official forums.

Most of the photographs that I, personally, value most highly, and most enjoyed producing, will be found in my "Interiors" album.

I'm particularly interested in the composition of shots, and layout, but most especially in the use of light and dark, and in shadow. I also am trying to capture emotional "mood" through all of these elements, combined with facial expression. I am fascinated by the paradox that it is, or at least should be, possible to communicate something about the keyboardist behind the avatar through the incredibly artificial medium of the avatar. I am also becoming more interested in landscape, again, as a means of capturing emotional states.

Thematically, my photos are informed -- sometimes obviously, and sometimes not -- by my feminism. On occasion, my politics, and interest in social justice issues, are expressed in a fairly straight-forward way, but they underwrite, to some degree or another, nearly everything here. Ultimately, I think art is always political.

Finally, I am attracted to the photography as a means of storytelling. Sometimes I use words to assist with this, and sometimes not; some of my photographs are formally "grouped" into albums in a way that suggests that they can be seen as something like a coherent narrative. Always, though, I'd like to think that each of my pictures tells a tale, even if it is only a very simple one.

Be kind. Or, if you can't be kind, just throw coins. But preferably not straight at me. Because ouch.

Cajsa Lilliehook has written a short but lovely piece on my work that makes it sound as though I know what I'm doing for New World Notes that you can read here: nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2020/09/sl-flickr-scylla-rhiadra-cajsa....

Scylla was one of my early inspirations from the Second Life forums picture threads. I have watched Scylla evolve rapidly into an expert story-teller, by manipulating light, dark, shadows, and focus. Scylla has a very distinctive style fingerprint which is unmistakeable. Few others, if any, can match her mastery of gloom, shadows and point light. Her latest ballet school story line is truly inspirational.

I didn't know this stream and came across a picture by chance, which made me curious. The way her pictures are made are unique! No matter which picture I look at, it is so real and brings up so much emotion. Simply wonderful!

All photographers know how important is use of light in composition. Most photographers take advantage of light as main element of the scenario. Few ones are able to measure and balance accurately required amount of light to create an emotional impact. And then, one in a million, it comes up Scylla Rhiadra.

Your pictures are beautiful, little stories told in each one but amount to a whole bunch of great work.

I am not sure that what you are writing can actually be consistent. I mean the interaction of several factors or emotions (rather). I finished touring your photos and read several of your writings. I don't know what to praise anymore. Undoubtedly your photos, has the perfect balance of light and shadows. I could not begin to criticize them, (in a good way). But what makes you someone different and special in this flickr world, is the staging of your sources, be it, of a movie, a book, and even your own narratives, makes your page a mandatory excursion. Be it to surprise us with your images or fall, absorbed, to see the choice of your writings. Rarely or almost never did I have such a state of wonderful confusion. You know, it's like when you go out of the cinema and you can't get away from what you saw, the streets are not, for a period of time, what you usually walk, the cars are not those of your time, you walk, floating. You understand me, right? For those who go through the pages just to give a link, (at best), I'm sorry for them, well, I just left the Art Center, and it has a name: Scylla Rhiadra
