Former nurse (now retired) fascinated by the history of the nurses' uniform dress. My pages are a social history project of an area of history that rarely gets spoken about. My particular interest is in what I have referred to as the "Newcastle Dress" - the particular style of nurses dress worn by all grades of nurse in the original Newcastle Hospital Board region - that is the North-East of England (and Cumbria and parts of North Yorkshire) between the early 1970s and mid-1990s. This unusual style of (relatively impractical) rear-zip dress would have been worn for many millions of "woman-hours" during the over twenty years it was used (including by me!) but relatively little has been written of spoken about it. If you have any information about its history, or your experience of it, please contact me at newcastlepenny@hotmail.co.uk or by Flickr DM. Even an 18-year student wearing one of the very last white student dresses in 1995-96 would now be 50 years old, so let's not lose this history! I am also interested in information on the front zip, white collar dress worn by student and qualified nurses at the Manchester Royal Infirmary in the 70s and 80s. Penny.
