Why do I have birds and trains as major subjects for my photographs? Makes sense to me. Both are dynamic subjects, both give me lots to think about and both have held my interest for years..
People ask if I'm a birder who carries a camera or a photographer who is interested in birds. For me it is the latter. While I want to learn more about birds (and photographic skills) it is recording something important and interesting - and learning to do it well - that never gets old.
Train travel is very much the same. One sees the country you travel through. There is time to think about it and - hopefully - really see what you are looking at. When I mention I love the cross country rail trip on VIA Rail many people ask how long it takes as though it might be too long. That is not an issue for me. Riding "The Canadian" helps me grasp the diversity and beauty of Canada. Just like birding, It never gets old.
