This is a exclusive page for only 3 category trains of INDIA. these are EMU, MEMU & DEMU. Basically Multiple units (MU) are self-propelled train carriages capable of coupling with other units of the same or similar type and still being controlled from one driving cab. Often these are passenger train-sets consisting of more than one carriage. Single self-propelling carriages (also called rail cars, rail motor coaches or rail-buses) are multiple units if capable of operating with other units.

Multiple units are classified by their power source and are of two main types : Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) or Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU). Diesel powered units may be further classified by their transmission type as Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) & same goes for electricity powered units, that can further classified as Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU).

Basically EMU runs in metropolitan city and operated in short distance service. And rest of 2 (MEMU & DEMU) runs for long distance journey.
