My name is Cappy, and I live in southern Maine. I am a high school English Language Arts teacher for at-risk students and a student in Green Mountain College's MSES/ Writing & Communications program. Though my work in the public school system is rewarding and challenging (in a positive way), it has always been my dream to write for a living. When I was in high school, I always imagined that I would write and take photos for important magazines. My path, of late, seems to be leading me back to some of these early ambitions.
I have always enjoyed photography. My first camera was a Polaroid, a cherished gift from my father. I may have been eight years old. I chronicled every family memory, marveling at the images appearing before my eyes. Then I received his Pentax K1000 as a hand-me-down, which allowed me to take photography courses in high school and college. The magic in capturing moments, in watching images emerge in the developer bath, never grew old. For this course, I will be using a Nikon D5100, and I anticipate the same excitement in learning to manipulate the camera settings and computer tools unique to digital images.
I am looking forward to sharing some of my work with my cohort (and others) as a means of learning the art and craft of photography. I believe strong, compelling images play an essential role in communicating perspectives, intentions, and messages. My ultimate goals for this Flickr page are to practice looking for and capturing moments and scenes, to curate potential original images for my capstone/ thesis, and to improve overall as a photographer in response to the feedback, critique and support of my classmates.
