This photostream is dedicated to my grandfather, Charles Edward Barr, who left me a lot of amazing photos of his European service in World War Two. All photos were created by him.
Born in 1910, Drafted at age 32. Died in 1984 in Warren, Ohio where he lived his wife Helen who he wrote to during his service almost everyday. I have all the letters too.
He served in the 12th Field Artillery Battalion the entire time he was overseas. The 12th was the medium artillery for the 2nd Infantry Division, which comprised of a dozen 155mm M1 Howitzers. You'll see them in the pictures.
Unit history is here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2nd_Infantry_Division_(United_States)
He was drafted on March 24, 1942. Discharged Oct 1945.
His unit entered France at Omaha Beach a day after the first landings and ended the war in Czechoslovakia. Heavily involved in the Battle of the Bulge on the "north shoulder" at Elsenborn Ridge.
I understand that my grandfather was a first lieutenant in the Signals which was very important for communications for the batteries. The wires they laid connected the forward observers to the guns and made their fire very effective.
Hope you enjoy them.
